Final Project Research Part 2; National Council Against Drug Abuse

February 2, 2011 at 12:02 PM (Uncategorized)

Evaluation on NCADA Website

  • They uses web 2.0
  • The information given is in details.
  • Their layout is too plain
  • unattractive layout design
  • Website has not enough pictures and it is too wordy, which might cause users to be uninterested in what the website has to offer
  • not updated frequently enough, which is not useful at all because one of the main reasons why people come to the website is to read up on latest information about the organisation
  • colour contrast of the entire webpage is very off-balanced, especially the fonts. This makes it harder for users to read what is written on the webpage
  • Fonts used are too small which might be a problem for users who are unable to read small fonts.
  • History of campaign that have been organised by the organisation is not provided, which should be included so that users would be able to know more about the organisation.
  • very specific details are given about organisation, including details about the partnerships.

New Media Landscape

February 2, 2011 at 11:55 AM (Uncategorized)

On 11 January 2011, two guest speakers came to our school to give us a talk. The first speaker, talk about Marketing and Interruption Marketing. When we visit a website, and there is a pop-up advertisement, it means Interruption Marketing. It literally interrupt us when we visit a website. They hope that we will see the banner or advertisement and then we will click on it. He also mentioned about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) which is getting web page to be the first on every search engines.

The next speaker did web design, eCommerce and web development. He came from a design company and they help famous blogger for example XiaXue to design her blog. Other people might think that designing does not earn big money. However, they do earn big money. They even have casual things in their office. Imagine having PS3 in our office?? The designers have PS3 in their office. However, this job really need lots of hard work to be done,

Reflection

1)

– One of my favourite ACM exhibit is Solving the Puzzle at the Southeast Asia Gallery. This is the interactive zone where you can interact while learning with the exhibit. For this exhibit, there are 4 different types of stories about the history of the olden days for Chinese. For example, how century egg first started. Firstly, it was quite challenging because in one story, the color of the boxes are different and I thought some of the boxes does not belong to the same story. In the end, after figuring it out and reading the stories slowly, my friend and I managed to solve all 4 stories. Not only us teenagers who can interact while learn at the same time, children and even adult could also interact and learn.

– My second favorite is at the Explorer Asian Zone where we could hear how Islam prayers are being read out. Here, we could hear different types of melody of the different Islam Prayers. They provide two headphones and a button menu to choose which prayer we want to hear. They also provide a sofa and two pillows for out comfort when hearing the prayers. This is my favorite because its rare to find media which we could hear Islam prayers. Here at ACM, they put up an media exhibit to let us hear the Islam prayers.

2) 2 New Media tools/technologies the museum used for public communication and education are:

– In each gallery, there will be a introduction computer which we can interact. There is one person in the computer to tell us about the gallery. We could choose what section we want to hear and the person will tell us about the section.Furthermore, the computer is touch screen and it has followed the current new media technologies.

– At the entrance of the first gallery, there are projectors screen which screens the history of the past lives. In this way, we could watch the clip while walking through the gallery.  In the clip, there are photos of the past and even videos to show how they live in the past. This museum mostly uses new media technologies and tools to let us interact with the exhibit.

3) 1 recommendation to improve the way the current content is being presented to the public is:

The museum could add in a video of each gallery found in the museum to the ACM’s website. This is because, there is no videos in the website to show about the galleries. In this way, people can know about the gallery more and they  can know what the gallery looks like. Without the videos, people may not know about the gallery that well. People will also get to find out what kind of exhibit and gallery found at the museum.

Literature Review; Politics and Social Media

November 12, 2010 at 9:41 AM (Uncategorized)

http://www.bcs.org/server.php?show=conWebDoc.33663

Introduction

There are so many technologies out there that have been engaged with politics. From video and audio to mobile integration. This allows the politicians to reach the people easier and immediately.  Years ago organizations were using mailers and the telephone which took hours of organization. Now, social media has made a lot of changes in the politics.

Political participation has always been highly engage with income and education. According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, online users with a higher income are more likely to participate in political activities online than those with lower incomes. At the same time, though, the Pew study also sees some hints that new forms of civic engagement through social media services could soon change this pattern.

http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2010/09/social-media-helps-drive-traffic-engagement-at-newshour257.html

Body

From the article, i chosen 3 key findings;

  1. The examples of Social Media with Politics
  2. The comparison between two countries about politics and social media
  3. The impact of Social Media
  • FaceBook– Years ago, people said that putting up issues on FaceBook was negative. But as years goes by, FaceBook has changed politics dramatically. Now, managers and focus groups managed their work online via FaceBook. They even work 24/7 online,  whether they are in the office or out of the office. FaceBook still accompany them for their work. FaceBook also allows them to engage with the conversations.
Twitter– By using twitter, Politicians are able to track a public conversation between friends. Twiiter allows to mark text using Hashtags(#). Hashtags are a great way to see unique conversations, along with different views.
    YouTube
    – When politicans answer questions publically and post them to be viewed as a reference, they are displaying transparency. Being human is knowing that not everyone is going to agree with you all the time. So if you can say things in a space that is forever, you display bravery and passion- things that all humans can at least respect.
  • In the UK, somewhat lagging in the influence of bloggers, are political blogs that have extracted significant influence. No politician who wants to capture young votes can afford to be without one, but their usual feeble efforts are a reminder of the pace and innovation of the digital domain. While in the Australia, New media offers them new opportunities to have their words heard through tweets and blogs and to publish opinion pieces that would have otherwise hit the spike on their own web pages.
  • The introduction of social networking technologies to millions of web users has reproduced that capacity of interactivity with some killer additional elements, the power of broadband always on networking, mobile computing, and user-friendly interfaces.  One tweet can go from a few followers to millions in minutes, and always-on internet in handheld computers and phones means it is truly ubiquitous

Conclusion

In the last 50 years the media has grown exponentially with the advance of technology, first there was the telegraph, then the radio, the newspaper, magazines, television and now the internet. This has impacted our society today.

Now, we live in a society that depends on information and communication to keep moving forward and do our daily activities like work, entertainment, health care, education, personal relationships, traveling and anything else that we have to do. We depends much on this advanced technology; new media.

Having this high-technology; new media, allows our society to do work even faster and communicate with distance-people even faster and easier. However, with this, our society will be too pampered having all this technology. People will be depending on all this for their work, school and etc.
